Dr. Steven Eidman: Legal Requirements for Opening a Dental Practice

A management consultant for BestCare Family Dental, Dr. Steven Eidman provides advice on best practices in staffing, marketing, systems administration, and other aspects of practice coordination. Since accepting this position in 2008, he has introduced programs and staffing initiatives that have tripled the practice’s revenues.

According to the American Dental Association, nearly ¾ of dental practitioners choose to open a solo practice. This requires not only clinical expertise, but also compliance with a variety of local, state, and federal regulations. New dental practitioners must possess a state license to practice as well as a National Provider Identification (NPI), acquired through the National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES).

Furthermore, the practice owner must ensure compliance with all relevant medical and drug regulations. For example, a practice must comply with the infection control regulations set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), as well as all waste management laws at the state and local levels. A practice that distributes or uses anesthesia and other drugs in-office may be required to secure relevant permits, depending on applicable laws, and all staff practices must comply with federal job safety requirements. More information is available through the American Dental Association as well as other relevant government organizations.
